Rush (Romance, 97 words)

This piece was written for a writing contest. My prompts were Romance (genre), hard-boiled eggs (object), and climbed (required word). If you haven’t tried these prompt contests, they’re great for stoking your imagination. They’re a lot of fun also.

Three friends 500 feet above the gorge, their car parked on the bridge. It only took a minute to set up the table, chairs, and plates. Breakfast was plated, champagne poured.

“Cheers!” one of the men said to the lone woman in the group. “Life is fleeting.” They drank, then ate the cheese and hard-boiled eggs he’d laid out. In the distance, police cars approached. Jumpers were popular here.

The three climbed atop the beam and jumped. Halfway down, they deployed their parachutes.

“You may kiss the bride!” the couple’s minister friend yelled above the rushing wind.
