Forever Gracie

Poetry

Gracie was much more than just a pet. To those fortunate enough to have known her, she was a friend, a companion, a healer. Taken much too soon, she will always live on in our hearts. I love you, honey.

FOREVER GRACIE

We brought you home on Independence Day,

You sat on shoulder high to view the world;

Immediate, you set about to play,

Then sleep beside your family uncurled.

From peanut butter, eggs, to ice cream cones,

You sat with plaintive eyes ‘til hands did feed;

And greet us home with toys and barks and bones,

The love you gave—an everlasting need.

The ringing of the bell was music sweet,

Bed covers pinched at night, your length unmoved;

And lizards racing from your hurried feet,

Then lapping from our cup, your instinct proved.

Bye-bye, boo boo, rest well in happy sleep,

Your soul lives on, though teary eyes do weep.
