100-word story (literary)

I needed a break from editing my memoir so I decided to Google prompts for 100-word stories then use the first selection that came up. It was: a barista is crying at the coffee shop drive thru window.

Such brief stories always require brevity and sometimes inference. What do you think the narrator’s gender is, and why is the barista crying? The beauty of fiction is that different people come up with different answers through using their own imaginations and their own inference. If you’re thinking of writing fiction (or already do) and want to challenge yourself, I encourage you to write shorter stories to get the creative juices flowing. The shorter, the more difficult. But satisfying, nonetheless.
